It’s here folks. Some people in the worm say that it’s their favorite time of year, others just like to complain about the heat. Me, I’m psyched to finally get all of these CDs that bands told me they were going to put out in January (and to finally have time to write reviews that I said I was going to write in February). So let’s hear about five different CDs that will suit your many moods.

SPRING INTO WORMTOWN
I held off this one a few weeks because it seems that every sunny spring like day in April was followed by two days of chilly crappy downpours, but now it’s time. It’s that time of year again. Through the heavy coats and hoodies into storage, break out the shorts and t-shirts and get ready to enjoy nature as it should be, somewhat warm. Put aside gloomy memories or thoughts of the extra weight you may have gained in the off season and get ready to rock…or do whatever it is these bands do. – Phil McNamara START THE YEAR WITH LOCAL TUNES: THE ACACIA, GUNS OF NAVARONE, HEY NOW MORRIS FADER AND JON SHORT

What can I tell ya’ about 2008? Let’s see. My predictions were correct (which I’m not happy about). Namely my prediction about less CDs being released by local (and New England) bands came true. From the peak year of 2004 when I reviewed 32 local CDs and eight by out-of-towners, the number has been subtly dropping three of four CDs every year to where I only reviewed 15 local CDs and another three from out of town this year. On the positive side they were, for the most part, very good. In 2008, band didn’t speak unless they had something to say. These four CDs were good examples. All four bands gave me CDs that I was psyched to hear, a great way to start the year I tell ya’. – Phil McNamara

Sure they’re not from the Worm, but they rock, they’re fun and they always send me a CD with a note that says, hey Phil maybe this CD will help us get some press the next time that we play Worcester. By next time they play Worcester, I assume they mean 2010. Sure I always forget about them until sometime after the New Year, but that doesn’t mean that I love them any less. Anyway, Boston bands fell out of touch with me this year or moved out of Boston, like Dave Smith did this October when he moved to Nashville, Tennessee. (Maybe he’ll run into ex-Bees Knees drummer Joe Giotta there). I only got CDs from three out of towners this year, but they were all pretty good. So for my buddies in The Acacia Strain, Dave Smith’s Country Rebel, and The Lonesome Brothers, buy one of their CDs for a loved one as a late Christmas present. Tell them that it’s Phil McNamara’s fault that it’s late because he didn’t tell you to buy it until after the New Year.

20 Artists of Worcester … and Their Work Spaces
Davis Art Gallery Printer’s Building 44 Portland Street Worcester Through January 23 This exhibit, and its coinciding eponymously named book, spotlights a cross section of Central Massachusetts artists from the well-established - including Stephen DiRado, whose “Comet Hyakutake, Looking Northwest, Edgartown, MA” graces the construction awning of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Howard Johnson, who’s shown at Boston’s Howard Yezerski Gallery - to new names equally deserving of your attention. It’s that time of year again kids. Where did the year go? If you do have any money left after paying your mortgage bill, utilities, insurance and groceries, it’s time to buy some gifts for family and loved ones. If you’re thinking about giving the gift of music, beware of those major label recordings. They’re all probably made in some big factory in New York or L.A. and in being shipped could bring with them all sorts of exotic elements, diseases, or maybe even an Asian Longhorn Beatle. You could unwittingly destroy someone’s Christmas tree. You wouldn’t want that on your conscience. Free yourself from worry and be unique at the same time by giving friends the gift of local music. You’ll be glad you did and so will they. - Phil McNamara

You know, back in the day…say 2003, someone started a thread on Wormtown.org’s bulletin board about what it was that made him happy to live in Wormtown. With the negativity that often floats around these bulletin boards, this was a welcomed change. Because of it, every time that this time of year rolls around I put aside my complaints and take stock in the things that make it great to live here. One of those things is a constant flow of interesting local Compact Discs that are not only high quality, but also diverse. The Foo Fighterish pop punk of Castine, the folk blues of Ken Macy, the happy sing-a-long pop of Huck, and the uplifting back to basic rock of The Lonesome Brothers make me say, “It’s good to live in the Wormtown.” Don’t believe me? Try living in Hartford, Connecticut or Rochester, New York; cities that are equal to Worcester in size, but that have much less going on. It’s not until you go elsewhere that you realize that living in Wormtown is something that you should be thankful for. – Phil McNamara

It’s true you know. One of people’s biggest complaints about our beloved music scene is that it’s unstable. Bands change all the time. The best bands always break up leaving us with a bunch of bands that we’ve never even heard of. What’s wrong with bands you’ve never heard of? I’d never heard of The After Hours before I got their CD, but their 3 songs of emotive lyrics and hard rock influenced sound has been making my head bang. I hadn’t heard of many of the bands on “It Came from Planet Mental” either, but once I did, they became some of my new favorite bands. To be honest, when I got new CDs from the Pathetics and Time Beings I asked, “You mean they’re still together?” It turns out that they’re back and putting out some of the best music I’ve ever heard from either band.
Unfortunately one of my favorite Boston / UMass-Amherst bands, Jaya the Cat did break up last year. I was a little crushed to hear that. Jaya’s old guitarist Dave Smith’s new album “Country Rebel” picked me right back up from that and made me realize that old adage, “Change is good.” So without further adieu, here are five more reviews. Hey, that almost rhymes. STILL WORKING FOR YOU: PHIL MCNAMARA'S LATEST CD REVIEWS: STY MONSTERS, SILENT MIND, JIM MCNALLY, GOLD STAR CAMPAIGN AND DENIS C

WORMTOWN'S ENDLESS SUMMER
Hey gang, now that the nights are getting cooler and arriving earlier folks are retreating indoors. Fortunately you can keep that summer feeling all year long. All you have to do is listen to something local; say a catchy guitar strumming singer/ songwriter, some bad ass head banging metal, or a sing along hard rock band. Fortunately, Wormtown's got all of that and more, enjoy. MORE PHIL LEFTOVERS: HIS TOP FIVE OUT OF TOWN CDS OF 2007

Sure, these bands might not be from the Worm or even from Worcester County, but we’re always happy when they visit and they all have new CDs out. Check out the music, check out their web sites and who knows, you might find something that’ll cure your winter blues. - Phil McNamara
